Colorful Blown Glass Chalcedony Vase
Multi-colored blown glass chalcedony vase.
The technique of manufacturing Chalcedony or Calcedonio glass was first employed in Egypt during Roman times, and it was then rediscovered in Murano in the fourteenth century. The technique's secret was lost for a time before being rediscovered by Murano master glassmaker Lorenzo Radi in the late 1800s.
Beautiful chalcedony glass was created as part of the Venetian quest to recover historic artistic skills, with Murano Glass artists attempting to replicate antique glassware. The streaks of beautiful hues in natural patterns comparable to chalcedony mineral in ancient Roman glassware made in Alexandria, Egypt, drew their attention.
